Kiel in Germany was the meeting place for two of the world’s most covetable and unique superyachts – Motor Yacht A and Sailing Yacht A, both designed by French design luminary Philippe Starck.
Snapped together for the first time, both are the prized possessions of Russian billionaire, Andrey Melnichenko. Sailing Yacht A is close to being completed in Kiel at the Nobiskrug yard, while Motor Yacht A was launched in 2008 by Blohm + Voss with naval architecture by Martin Francis, and exterior styling by Philippe Starck.
Motor Yacht A resembles a military-style submarine, but its features are pure decadence. With three swimming pools, including one with a glass floor and seven luxurious cabins, bomb-proof glass and a rotating bed in the Master suite plus three spa pools with current-generating technology, the 390ft (119m) Motor Yacht A is one of the 25 largest superyachts in the world. It also comes with 42 crew to make the onboard experience completely relaxing.
Motor Yacht A is powered by two diesel engines and has a top speed of 23 knots (42km/h or 26.4 mph) and a cruising speed of 19.5 knots (35km/h or 22.4 mph), with a range of 6,500 nautical miles.
Due for launch in 2107, Sailing Yacht A will dwarf her sibling. She measures 468ft (143m) and also rises eight decks in height. And, with gross tonnage exceeding 12,000, compared to Motor Yacht A's 5,959 Tonnes, that puts the scale into perspective.
With her equally fascinating profile, Sailing Yacht A is a sail-assisted motor yacht. Her propulsion consists of a variable-speed hybrid powerplant with two lineshaft controllable-pitch propellers and is sail-assisted by a three-mast fore-and-aft sailing rig.
Boasting a beam of 24.88m, Sailing Yacht A is a record breaker, with the largest carbon fibre masts in the world, manufactured by Magma Structures at Trafalgar Wharf, Portsmouth.
Doyle Sailmakers USA manufactured the three fully-automated carbonfibre/taffeta full roach sails. The furling booms were built in Valencia by Future Fibres. The vessel features a unique underwater observation pod in the keel with 30cm-thick glass.
Luxury Charter Group will be on the lookout for Motor Yacht A during the Monaco Yacht Show, one of her favourite haunts and a distinctive sight, even among the world's most impressive superyachts.
